As we enter another month on our count down to the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America, March stands out as another month filled with pivotal moments that shaped our nation's character and expanded its borders. From groundbreaking movements for equality, to the admission of new states, March has consistently proven to be a time of growth, courage, and transformation in American history.
Expanding the Union
March witnessed the admission of five states that would become integral parts of our nation's fabric. Vermont joined as the 14th state on March 4, 1791, followed by Ohio as the 17th state on March 1, 1803. Maine entered the Union on March 15, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise. Florida became the 27th state on March 3, 1845, and Nebraska joined as the 37th state on March 1, 1867. Each of these states brought unique resources, cultures, and perspectives that enriched the American tapestry.
Milestones for Women's Rights and Empowerment
Two landmark events in March forever changed the landscape for American women. On March 3, 1913, the first Women's Suffrage Parade took place in Washington, D.C., where thousands of women marched down Pennsylvania Avenue demanding the right to vote. This courageous demonstration, held the day before President Woodrow Wilson's inauguration, brought national attention to the suffrage movement and paved the way for the 19th Amendment.
Just one year earlier, on March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia. What began with 18 girls has grown into a movement that has empowered millions of young women to become leaders, innovators, and change-makers in their communities and beyond.
Presidential Legacies
March also celebrates the birthdays of four U.S. Presidents who left indelible marks on our nation. Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767) championed the common man and expanded democratic participation. James Madison (March 16, 1751), the "Father of the Constitution," helped architect the framework of our government. Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837) served as both the 22nd and 24th President, known for his integrity and reform efforts. John Tyler (March 29, 1790) set important precedents for presidential succession.
A Month of Significance
As we journey toward America's 250th birthday, March reminds us that our nation's story is one of continuous evolution—of expanding rights, welcoming new voices, and honoring the leaders who guided us through challenging times. These monumental moments in March reflect the enduring American spirit of progress, perseverance, and the ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union.
